PLOT:
Black photographer Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) and his white girlfriend Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) prepare for a trip to meet her parents, Dean (Bradley Whitford) and Missy Armitage (Catherine Keener). Chris is concerned because Rose hasn't told her parents that he is black, but Rose assures him everything will be fine and they leave.
As Chris and Rose arrive at the Armitage estate, Rose points out the black groundskeeper, Walter (Marcus Henderson). Rose's parents welcome Chris and Dean gives him a tour of the house, introducing him to their black maid Georgina (Betty Gabriel). When asked about his family, Chris mentions that his mother died in a hit-and-run incident when he was eleven years old. They also discuss Chris’s smoking habit, and Missy, a psychiatrist, offers to help him quit through hypnosis, but Chris declines. Rose's brother Jeremy (Caleb Landry Jones) arrives and the entire family has dinner with Chris.
That night, when Chris goes out into the backyard to smoke, he observes strange behavior from Walter and Georgina. When he re-enters the house, Missy brings up Chris's smoking habit and invites him to sit down, again mentioning hypnosis before asking Chris about the night his mother died. Chris reveals his guilt for not calling 911 as soon as he noticed that his mother never came home, and that he instead sat watching television. He finds himself unable to move and realizes he is being hypnotized. Missy commands him to sink into the floor, and his consciousness falls into a void; Missy tells him he is now in "the sunken place". Chris suddenly wakes up the next morning and believes that the encounter was just a nightmare; however, after a conversation with Walter, he realizes that Missy really did hypnotize him to quit smoking.
Guests arrive for the Armitages' annual get-together, where various older white couples take an interest in Chris. Chris meets celebrated blind art dealer Jim Hudson (Stephen Root), and a black guest, Logan King (LaKeith Stanfield). Chris is unsettled by Logan's bizarre demeanor and significantly older white wife. He calls his best friend, TSA Officer Rodney "Rod" Williams, discussing Missy's hypnosis of him and the disturbing vibes that the black people in the area are giving off. Later, Chris tries to stealthily take a picture of Logan but his phone flashes, causing Logan to suffer a nosebleed and hysterically yell at Chris to "Get out!" Dean explains away the episode by claiming that the camera flash caused Logan to have a seizure.
Chris and Rose go out for a walk and he tells Rose how uncomfortable the party is making him feel. Rose agrees to leave that night. While Chris and Rose are gone, Dean holds an auction for Chris, which is won by Jim Hudson. After returning to the estate to pack, Chris sends the picture of Logan to Rod, who recognizes Logan as Andre Hayworth, an acquaintance of Chris and Rod's from Brooklyn. Concerned, Chris tells Rose that they need to leave immediately. While Rose gets her bag, Chris finds a box in Rose's closet containing photographs that feature her with a series of black people, including Walter and Georgina. As he and Rose go downstairs, they are blocked by Jeremy, Dean, and Missy; Rose drops her ruse and reveals that she is an accomplice in her family's kidnapping of Chris. Chris attempts to escape but is incapacitated by Missy's hypnosis.
Rod becomes concerned when Chris does not return home or answer his calls, and discovers that Andre Hayworth went missing six months ago. Meanwhile, Chris wakes up strapped to a chair in the basement of the Armitage house and learns that the family has perfected a method of pseudo-immortality in which Dean, a neurosurgeon, transplants the consciousness of his older friends and family into younger black men and women, whose minds have been conditioned for the procedure by Missy. Chris will be used as a host for Jim, who wishes to use him to regain sight, and will be doomed to exist in "the sunken place" for the rest of his life as Jim controls his body.
Dean begins the surgical swap procedure and sends Jeremy to collect Chris from "pre-op". Chris, who had plugged his ears with the chair's stuffing and was faking unconsciousness, knocks Jeremy out and escapes. After killing Dean, Missy, and Jeremy, Chris starts driving away in Jeremy's car while dialing 911, but hits Georgina. The prospect of leaving Georgina to die triggers Chris's guilt for not helping his mother, so he drags Georgina into the car with him. Upon regaining consciousness, Georgina, whom Rose refers to as "grandma", makes Chris lose control of the car and they crash into a tree, killing her. Rose, now armed with a rifle, and Walter catch up with Chris. Walter, whom Rose refers to as "grandpa", tackles Chris, who uses his phone to take a photo of Walter with the flash on. Now free from his hypnosis, Walter tells Rose to give him her rifle. When she does, he shoots her in the gut and then himself in the head. The injured Rose attempts to recover the rifle, but Chris pushes it away and begins to strangle her. However, he finds himself unable to kill her, and stops trying just as a police car pulls up. Rose cries out for help, hoping that Chris will be seen as the attacker, but the police car turns out to be driven by Rod, coming to save Chris. The two drive away as Rose succumbs to her wound.
